It’s the fastest road legal Golf in the UK, possibly the world?! It’ll wave ‘ta-ta’ to a Yamaha R1 and a Bugatti Veyron down the 1/4 mile. Concurs buffers look away now.

Albert Einstein once said, “If at first the idea is not absurd – then there is no hope for it.” He must have heard about Andy Waite’s plans for his unassuming 1.5LS Golf when it had just 49,000miles on the clock. Einstein must have known that, one day, an elaborate monkey bar structure of cold steel and lightweight T45 Steel would surround those brave enough to clamber over and settle into those Cobra Susuka race pews.

So, as the kids alongside me start having a veritable accident in their pants about the Nissan Skyline that’s just pulled a huge burnout in the staging area of Santa Pod raceway, I smile at them knowingly! It’s a whoooooshhh Tisssccchhh extravaganza as the air is ripped apart by what’s clearly a very fast six cylinder RB26 motor. In the lane next door is an innocent looking Mk1 Golf with some graphics up the side and a rather purposeful looking roll cage and ducting in the rear windows. Little do the kids know that the Skyline and their Fast & Furious dreams are about to fall apart. Roughly 9 seconds later the Skyline is halfway up the track wondering what the hell just happened and the kids are now VAG heads for life.

But this is no ordinary Mk1 Golf. Oh no, Andy Waite’s awesome creation is as close to and a lot more than just a racecar for the road, thanks to new wave Haldex 4wd components and a stonking 660bhp 1.9T engine, with Garrett GT30 turbo for good measure. As far as we’re aware, it’s the fastest road legal Mk1 Golf the planet has to offer. If you know better please do let us know.

Andy used to run a Mk2 Golf Rallye that was capable of 0-60 in the low 3 second bracket, but when he couldn’t really make that any faster he started stripping the car down and transferring everything over into his new Mk1 Shell. When his 440bhp Rallye couldn’t cut through the timing beams any faster than 11-seconds, he decided that a sub 1000kg Mk1 was necessary in his pursuit for single figure timing slips.

It began life as a £50 1980 1.5LS small back light wreck that he purchased from someone in his village after it had rotted on their driveway. With just 49,000 miles on the clock it was the sort of car concours restoration specialists probably dream of.

Cut to pieces and bolted to a Mk2 Golf bodywork jig in his AK Bodycraft workshop in Fordham, Cambridgshire, Andy set about widening the Mk1 platform by 4mm in width and some 10mm in length to accommodate the same chassis dimensions as the aforementioned Rallye. It’s an epic build story. The specially adapted Haldex 4wd system and custom made driveshafts allow a whooping 660bhp to be transferred to the road with the minimum of fuss, and that’s without the Nitrous shoot that Andy uses to spool the AET turbo GT30R up the moment he leaves the line. Differing Nitrous jets allow him to deliver 60, 100 or 150bhp of NOS depending upon his mood, “It was a case of win it or kill it with this car, and so far we’ve managed to dominate pretty much any road legal car it comes up against,” Andy revealed.

Even the suspension turrents were raised 40mm while the transmission tunnel was raised to accommodate the custom Haldex and Syncro underpinnings. A hugely expensive shortened and balanced propshaft transfers the force of 6500rpm standing starts with 100% reliability so far. A six speed 02m box from a S3 uses a Peloquin LSD and Tdi Final drive, while a sadly discontinued Stroeve motorsport shifter allows rapid cog swapping at the helm.

Under the bonnet is a custom built 1851cc 20vt that uses Pipercross induction filter, ported small port head, custom JE low comp Pistons and a handmade Farndon Engineering forged steel crankshaft with I beam rods. It worth mentioning that Farndon Engineering also supply some well known international F1 teams with their cranks!

8 x 375cc fuel injectors and MBE 992 ECU supply go go juice via a Holley lift pump and Bosch 044 in line fuel pump forces it through for the big bang moment.

If you don’t like this car, then frankly… you have no soul.

Performance – 0-60 in 2.5 seconds, ¼ mile in 9.86seconds. GPS verified 174mph. Not bad for a 31 year old, aerodynamic… well, brick!
